My New Diagnosis - Gluten Encephalopathy

Yesterday, 13 Feb 2018, I had a consultation with Professor Hadjivassiliou. For those of you who aren’t familiar with his work he is the world-leading expert in the neurological effects of gluten and is behind the discovery that it’s possible to have an autoimmune reaction to the gliadin in gluten and not have celiac disease, a condition known as non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS). The Prof is a delightful man and we chatted for around an hour. He has formally diagnosed me with Gluten Encephalopathy, otherwise known as gluten psychosis, a severe brain disorder that manifests as mental illness due to eating gluten. Psychiatric illness is known to occur among people with celiac disease, however what is incredible in my case is that I don’t have celiac enteropathy but non-celiac gluten sensitivity and I am only the third person to have had this formally diagnosed in medical history, the first in the UK, and the first to have it present as bipolar disorder. This diagram depicts my symptoms as experienced from childhood. As there have been no epidemiological studies into this condition I am unable to tell you which of these symptoms are more common and which are rare. However, if you or someone you know is experiencing multiple symptoms on this list then maybe adopting a gluten free diet would be worth trying. For more severe symptoms I recommend following the Autoimmune Protocol (AIP).

A severe mental disorder in which thought and emotions are so impaired that contact is lost with external reality. ‘they were suffering from a psychosis’ Today my GP finally REMOVED my diagnosis of bipolar disorder type 1 from my list of diagnoses. With just one click she erased a label that had been a huge and distressing part of my recent past. Losing a psychiatric diagnosis is very unusual as they are usually just ‘upgraded’ to something else such as schizophrenia, which was looking increasingly likely in my case. She replaced it with ‘gluten intolerant’ as gluten ataxia and gluten psychosis aren’t yet recognised by the NHS. It doesn’t adequately explain what happens when I eat gluten, but I’ll take it over the bipolar label any day!
